The Borough of Pottstown is located in Montgomery County, PA. Its history begins with William Penn deeding the land, which is now Pottstown and the surrounding area, to his son John in 1701. As early as 1714 the first iron forge was built. Among the early settlers were Germans, Swedes, and English. By the 1720's, the first blast furnace was in operation for the production of cast iron and wrought iron. In 1732, the first steel furnace was in production in the Pottstown area.
The Potts family, who were iron masters, moved to this area and established a forge here. The Potts home was a showplace on a small hill just west of town.
John Potts, the oldest son of Thomas Potts, purchased nine hundred ninety-five acres in the area and in 1752 Pottstown was founded. When the town was first laid out, it stretched from York Street to Charlotte Street and from the Schuylkill River to Beech Street. Before 1800, the village was called Pottsgrove, however, as the population increased, this slowly evolved into Pottstown.
On February 6, 1815, this area was incorporated as a Borough, the second Borough formed in the county, Norristown being the first. The first election of town officers was held in April of 1815.
Soon after 1842, the Reading Railroad completed a series of lines from Philadelphia to Mt. Carbon, near Pottsville. Raw materials and coal were moved easily, and markets were more readily accessible. At this time, the population of the Borough was six hundred. Since the first forge, Pottstown has received much recognition in the metal industries. The most significant projects include the locks for the Panama Canal and the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Pottstown School District serves Pottstown's student population of 3,200 with quality learning opportunities. The District is comprised of eight buildings. The main Administration Building is located in close proximity to the downtown area. There are four elementary buildings: Barth, Franklin, Lincoln, and Rupert. A large campus with athletic playing fields and a stadium houses the two secondary schools. One, a traditional, but newly renovated Middle School located at one end of the campus, and the other, a more modernized four grade Senior High School with vocational facilities
The Pottstown School District has written curriculum to state and national standards. These content standards clearly identify what is to be taught. The state assessment (PSSA) measures achievement of the content standards in reading, writing, and mathematics. Performance, as well as content standards, are necessary components of a standards-based system. The District is developing quarterly assessments to more clearly define the level of learning that is expected at each grade level (elementary) and within each course (Middle School and High School). Currently, the staff is incorporating the state defined "assessment anchors" (PSSA-Assessment Anchors) into the curriculum, organizing the content into more focused units, and developing quarterly assessments to provide feedback to students and parents regarding student achievement toward curricular priorities.
There are quite a few beautiful scenic community parks in Pottstown for everyone to enjoy! Memorial Park is a 78 acre, full use park with activities for everyone, located at the corner of King & Manatawny Streets. There is also the Riverfront Park located of course by the river adjacent to the Schuylkill River Heritage Area offices. It features parking, a pavilion with picnic tables, port-a-potties, and easy access to downtown shops and eateries in addition to a 60-acre public park with wooded oasis with biking and walking trails, sitting areas, and an amphitheater for outdoor performances, allowing for a chance to reconnect with the Schuylkill River, a long part of Pottstown's industrial and recreational heritage.
Pottstown is definitely an up and coming area to enjoy raising a family, working in town or surrounding suburbs, and yet still be close to all major roadways, cities and towns near Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs.
